Screen Life in Hollywood

By Jackie Cooper

(Just as Jackie "rote" it, for Hubbard Keavy)

(Aug. 15, 1931)

It was very easy for me to cry in "Skippy" when the dog Penny died because I am very fond of pets, dogs especially. I know that I would cry if my dog died.

My ma said that I can't have a dog cause we wouldn't have time to take care of him on a count that we have to go to work every morning. Well a long time ago I had a dog and it ran away from me and then a couple years later I had some baby rabbits and one of them died on Easter. And then all of them died.

A friend of ours has a great Dane dog and it is the cleverest thing. I wish I had a ranch and then I could have horses and dogs and chickens and cows and all kinds of things. I was asked by Mr. Coogan (Jackie Coogan's father he is). But mother said she would worry too much. So I said come along with us and she said that she couldn't because she always has to go places.

I know a boy that lives right across the street from me and his name is Allan Buckland. And he has a little squirrel and its name is "Tippy." And it has a great big cage about four feet long and about four feet wide. That little squirrel has a little brother or mate or whatever you want to call it, and those squirrels play together all the time and have lots of fun.

And Allan has a little cat and its name is "Micky" and boy can that cat run and how.

I am living down to the beach now where I am writing this story and I think when we move back to Hollywood we will have a whole bunch of birds and canary's and 'LOVE' birds and all kinds of birds.

Out here at the beach there's a man named Shorty and he has a police dog and that police dog does everything you can think of.

It even says its prayers which I do when I'm not too tired after spending all the day at the studio and it sleeps in a real bed and everything.

I am getting ready for my next part in "Sooky" and I still will be Skippy, but Robert Coogan will have the leading part in that.

I have been swimming every day but some days I ride horseback. Next to swimming, I like horseback riding and one day I went horseback riding with Marjorie White and we was out for four hours and when I came home I had to stand up when I ate dinner. When I say I ride a horse, I ride a horse and its know pony or mule.
