On an average of almost once a week now we get the news that M-G-M has bought a new story for Jackie Cooper. Today comes the announcement that the latest story purchase for this youngster is "God Gave Me a Son," which was written by an Oklahoma school teacher of the name of Jeannie Harris Bliss. This must make a total of at least six stories which M-G-M is planning for little Jackie who catapulted to stardom in "Skippy." Some little fellers seem to get all the breaks. Jackie is just eight years old and he is a star comnmanding attention which seasoned actors have never received. He celebrated his birthday recently while he was working on the set with Wallace Beery in "The Champ." There never was a child who could keep his birthday a secret, so it was not long before the company discovered the great occasion. Jackie was sent off the set on some pretext, and when he returned he found a birthday cake, a new pair of boxing gloves and other presents awaiting him. And King Vidor, the director, and the entire cast were standing by to present congratulations. If the studio continues to buy stories at such a fast pace for Jackie, it will be necessary to rush production to get them all made before he outgrows little boy roles.
