Now Sayre movie star fans will be given an opportunity to see a real Hollywood actor they might justly call their own - Darla Jean Hood. And - in person!
Darla Jean Hood, Hollywood's most recent juvenile sensation, who is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Danner of Sayre, will appear in person here in a special program at the Wednesday matinee and night showing at the Rio theatre.
The young movie star who recently rated the Weekly News Revue, movie news magazine, as one of the most recent hits of the film colony, gained an introduction into the movie world as a student of Miss Katherine Duffy, noted song and dance teacher, after first appearing on the Oklahoma City Milk and Ice fund program earlier this year
Played in Chicago
Darla Jean was carried on east where she appeared on the stage in Chicago and New York City, later passing a screen test that paved her way to success and introduction into the movie picture world.
She will appear in a special song and dance feature at the Rio theatre here next Wednesday (Jan. 1st). Arrangements for her appearance here were completed Christmas day by George Stovall, local theatre manager, when the young movie star was in Sayre visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Danner.
The movie star's mother, Mrs. J. C. Hood, of Leedey, is a former resident of Sayre who has lived for the past few years at Leedey where her husband is cashier of a bank. Mrs. Hood stays with her daughter while she is in Hollywood making pictures. She is under contract there with the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie company.
Featured in 'Follies'
Darla Jean played her first major role in a moving picture in Hal Roach's feature presentation, "Our Gang Follies of 1936." Many Sayre residents saw the picture when it was filmed here recently.
Darla Jean, who is appearing at a number of Oklahoma theatres during her Christmas vacation, will return to Hollywood shortly after her appearance at the Rio theatre to begin work on another picture, according to Mr. Stovall.
As many people as can, have been urged by the theatre manager to see the matinee feature which starts at 2 o'clock Wednesday, so that more people will be allowed to see the program Wednesday night. A large crowd is expected at each performance.
