Eight years old . . . has been in motion pictures since he was two and one-half . . . is in third grade in the studio school . . . likes arithmetic better than any other study . . . enjoys personal appearances more than acting on location because it means travel . . . likes to swim . . . and to astonish his friends by trying to go Believe-it-or-not-Ripley one better.
That is a very brief sketch of Harry Spear, better known as "Freckles" in Hal Roach's "Our Gang" comedies, who appeared in person on the stage at the Capitol Theatre here Thursday (the 5th), and will make additional personal appearances Friday and Saturday at both afternoon and evening performances.
Wearing the patches and tatters familiar to the followers of "Our Gang" comedies, Harry impresses one as a genuine young person both on the stage and off. A brown derby sitting on a shock of brown hair, a pink checkered gingham shirt, and trousers hitched up with mammoth safety pins, completed his outfit.
He carries a pet menagerie with him, consisting of six turtles, two of which are from the Arizona desert, a canary, a lizard which Tom Mix presented him, and a pet dog Billie, a gift from Irene Castle.
Six years in pictures and before the public have apparently left this young star unspoiled, for outside of the sureness which comes from daily contact with the public, Harry has none of the theatres affectations.
You will love this "honey boy," "hardboiled guy" of the "gang."
