name: Harley Marquis Walker
nickname: "Beanie"
born June 27, 1885, in Logan County, OH (also listed as being born in New Orleans)
died June 23, 1937, in Chicago, IL, of a heart attack
The following filmography is incomplete due to a number of factors. Firstly, the earliest Rolin/Roach product (when Walker first started to write the
titles) did not carry credits for title writing. Nevertheless, in her book The Harold Lloyd Encyclopedia, Annette D'Agostino Lloyd credited Walker with
writing the titles of all the Lloyd films from mid 1917 until Lloyd left the Roach studio in 1923. It isn't clear whether source material provided this information,
or if an assumption was made to the effect that, if Walker was employed at the studio, then he must have written the inter-titles for every film. There would be two
problems with such an assumption. Firstly, there were rare occasions when others were given credit for writing the titles. For instance, in 1923, Hal Conklin received
the credit for the Stan Laurel short "Postage Due," and A. H. Giebler received it for another Laurel short, "Zeb Vs. Paprika." And avid Our Gang fans
will note that Reed Heustis received the credit on three of the late silent episodes, and that Giebler wrote the titles for "The Buccaneers" (no. 24).
Secondly, Walker worked part-time for the first three years of his Roach tenure, not going full-time until 1920. This decreases the chance that he would have
written all of the titles from 1917 to 1920. Nevertheless, it seems reasonable to assume that Walker wrote the titles for the vast majority of Roach films made from 1920
to the end of the silent era, and submitted dialogue for virtually all of the talkies until his 1932 retirement. Another factor keeping this filmography from completion
is the sparseness of published credits to this effect. For instance, Brian Anthony & Andy Edmonds give credit for title writing for some films but not others in
their book Smile When The Raindrops Fall. This is also true of Rob Stone's Laurel Or Hardy and Randy Skretvedt's Laurel And Hardy: The Magic
Behind The Movies. On top of that, my collection of non-Our Gang Roach films is far from complete, so I can't always do independent verification. The one
happy exception to this trend is the 1921 Motion Picture Studio Directory and Trade Annual, which specifically credits Walker with nine Harold Lloyd
multi-reelers. It also states that Walker had titled over 600 films by that time. Needless to say, readers are encouraged to make additions and corrections to this
list.
During the '10s, Walker wrote for the Los Angeles Examiner. Initially, he was a sports writer and cartoonist, eventually writing a regular sports column
entitled "An Ear To The Ground." By the end of the decade, he was writing a more generalized column (but still in the sports section) entitled
"The Wisdom O' Blinky Ben."
1917
- Around the early or mid part of the year, Walker began to write titles for the Rolin company on his days off, while continuing his job at the Examiner.
Reportedly, "Lonesome Luke Loses Patients" was the earliest film he worked on. This piece of information comes from The Harold Lloyd Encyclopedia, which
also credits Walker with the titles for "Stop! Luke! Listen!" which is a slightly earlier film. The titles were written after the film in question
was shot, and as title-writer, Walker was usually the one to name each film.

- During this year, Walker left his job at the Examiner to work full-time for Roach. At some point, Walker became the head of the editorial department,
meaning that film editors like T. J. Crizer and Richard Currier worked under him. It isn't clear at what point this happened, but it seems more likely to have been
after Walker started working for Roach full-time. It may have been under this arrangement that he began to attend previews of each film and write critiques which
would be used as a basis for improving them. He was certainly doing this by the end of 1923. In any event, it's clear that Walker had at least a casual involvement
with every Roach film made from this point until his retirement in 1932.

- By this time, Walker was Vice-President and Production Manager at the Roach studio. This is the earliest year for which we can research the title sheets prepared
upon the completion of each film. Walker's name is on all of the surviving sheets for the Our Gang films for the next four years. It appears that he must have gone
on vacation at the end of the year since several early 1928 releases give the titles credit to Reed Heustis, including the Our Gang films "Spook Spoofing"
(no. 71) and "Rainy Days" (no. 72). However, the title sheets for both of these films were prepared by Walker, presumably after Heustis had
already handled the creative end of this process.
