Richard Currier

full name: Richard Carlton Currier
nickname: Dick
born Aug. 26, 1892, in Denver, CO
died Dec. 14, 1984, in El Toro, CA

1920

After a short spell with Reelcraft, Currier joined the Roach editorial department in 1920, probably late in the year. Reportedly, he was in a supervisory position from the very beginning, but there are reasons to doubt this. During the period from 1925 to 1932, Currier received credit for editing virtually every Roach film because of his status as the supervising editor. Prior to this period, editing credits are sparse, but those that can be ascertained pretty much always go to Thomas J. Crizer, who had been with Roach for at least a couple of years when Currier joined. This makes it likely that Currier began as a cutter working under Crizer, and became supervisory editor only after Crizer departed in 1925. In any event, even the supervisory editor answered to title writer H. M. Walker, the real head of the editorial department. All that having been said, there is plenty of potential for Currier to have been involved in many of the Our Gang films made prior to his promotion.

15 episodes. Filmed Oct. 3, 1921, to Feb. 27, 1922. ©June 26, 1922. This is the only Roach film prior to 1925 for which I've found any specific information on Currier. A trade magazine of the era mentions that Currier had by this time edited some of the first chapter of this serial. Nevertheless, if anybody received onscreen credit, it was probably Crizer.

1925

Crizer left the Roach studio probably sometime between February and May. This put Currier in charge of film editing, which meant that he received credit on virtually every Roach film until his departure in 1932, regardless of who actually cut the film.

1932

Currier was let go during studio downsizing late in the year. His last editing credit for the Our Gang series was for "Fish Hooky" (no. 120), which was also the last Our Gang short for which he prepared the title sheet. He did, however, receive editing credit on the synopsis for "Forgotten Babies" (no. 121). The onscreen credit for this film went to Jack Ogilvie. Currier's dismissal was coincidental with his refusal to spy on the Laurel & Hardy unit for general manager Henry Ginsberg. This happened while Roach was out of town.
